Does Teeth Cleaning (Scaling) Weaken Teeth? Myths & Facts

"Scaling will make my teeth loose." "After cleaning, my teeth became sensitive, so it must be harmful." These are some of the most common worries we hear from patients in Kerala. Let us look at the facts about professional teeth cleaning, also called scaling.

What Is Scaling?

Scaling is the removal of hard deposits called tartar (calculus) from the teeth and below the gum line. Tartar forms when plaque is not removed properly. It cannot be removed with a toothbrush. Dentists use ultrasonic instruments to clean it, followed by polishing.

Myth 1: Scaling Weakens or Loosens Teeth

Fact: Scaling does not remove any part of the tooth. It only removes tartar. Tartar slowly destroys the gums and bone that hold the teeth. Sometimes, teeth that were held only by hard tartar feel slightly loose after cleaning. The cause is the gum disease, not the scaling. After cleaning, gums heal and usually become firmer.

Myth 2: Scaling Creates Gaps Between Teeth

Fact: The gaps were already there, filled with tartar. Once the tartar is removed, the real gaps become visible. Early treatment prevents the gaps from getting bigger.

Myth 3: Sensitivity After Scaling Means Damage

Fact: Mild sensitivity for a few days is normal because root surfaces that were covered by tartar are now exposed. It usually settles on its own or with a desensitising toothpaste.

Myth 4: If There Is No Pain, Cleaning Is Not Needed

Fact: Gum disease is usually painless until it is advanced. Bleeding gums, bad breath and receding gums are early warning signs.

Benefits of Regular Scaling

  • Stops bleeding gums and gum swelling
  • Removes bad breath
  • Removes tea, coffee and tobacco stains
  • Prevents tooth loss due to gum disease
  • Supports better control of diabetes and heart health

How Often Should You Get Scaling?

For most people, once every 6 months. Smokers, diabetics and people with gum disease may need it more often. Your dentist will advise the right interval.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Is scaling painful?

No. Most people feel only mild vibration. If gums are very inflamed, local anaesthesia can be used.

2. Can pregnant women get scaling?

Yes. Scaling is safe in pregnancy, ideally in the second trimester, and helps prevent pregnancy gum problems.

3. Will my teeth become white after scaling?

Scaling removes stains and tartar, so teeth look cleaner. For a whiter shade, teeth whitening is a separate treatment.
